Abstract of the Disclosure An aqueous acidic electrolyte and process for electrodepositing a zinc-ccbalt alloy on a conductive substrate comprising zinc and cobalt ions, a brightening system including a brightening amount of a primary brightener comprising a bath soluble and compatible halogenated aryl aldehyde as well as derivatives thereof and a carrier brightener present m an amount effective to refine the grain of the zinc-cobalt alloy electrodeposit. The electrolyte further contains hydrogen ions to provide a pH on the acid side and optionally but preferably an auxiliary brightener to further enhance the brightness of the zinc-cobalt alloy deposit. Optionally and preferably, the electrolyte further contains buffering agents, dispersing agents and conductivity agents of the types conventionally employed in usual amounts.
