ABSTRACT A zinc dendrite inhibitor for addition to a zinc halide-containing electrolyte which deposits zinc on a cathode through an electrochemical reaction, the inhibitor comprising from 10-4 mol/l to the saturated concentration of a quaternary ammonium salt and at least two metal ions selected from the group consisting of from about 10-4 to about 10-3 mol/l of divalent lead ions, from about 10-4 to about 10-3 mol/l of divalent tin ions and from about 10-4 to about 10-2 mol/l of divalent cadmium ions. The inhibitor prevents dendrite formation which results in a uniform zinc deposit on the cathode.
