Pyrogenically prepared zinc oxide powder having a BET surface area of from 10 to 200 m /g, which is in the form of aggregates, the aggregates being composed of particles having different morphologies, and 0-10 % of the aggregates being in a circular form, 30-50 % being in an ellipsoidal form, 30-50 % being in a linear form and 20-30 % being in a branched form. It is prepared by reacting a starting mixture containing zinc vapour, a combustible gas and steam or a mixture of steam and carbon dioxide in a flame with an oxygen-containing gas in an oxidation zone, cooling the hot reaction mixture in a quenching zone and separating the solid material from the gas stream, the amount of oxygen in the oxidation zone being greater than the amount necessary for the complete oxidation of the combustible gas and the zinc vapour. The zinc oxide powder can be used as a constituent of sun protection compositions for protection against UV radiation.
L'invention concerne une poudre d'oxyde de zinc préparée par un processus pyrogénique, cette poudre possédant une surface BET comprise entre 10 et 200 m?2¿/g. Ladite poudre se présente sous forme d'agrégats composés de particules présentant différentes morphologies, 0 à 10 % des agrégats étant présents sous forme circulaire, 30 à 50 % sous forme ellipsoïdale, 30 à 50 % sous forme linéaire et 20 à 30 % sous forme ramifiée. La poudre selon l'invention est préparée par un procédé consistant à faire réagir un mélange de départ contenant de la vapeur de zinc, un gaz combustible et de la vapeur d'eau ou un mélange de vapeur d'eau et de dioxyde de carbone dans une flamme avec un gaz contenant de l'oxygène à l'intérieur d'une zone d'oxydation, à refroidir le mélange réactionnel chaud dans une zone de refroidissement et à séparer la matière solide du flux gazeux, la quantité d'oxygène dans la zone d'oxydation étant supérieure à la quantité nécessaire à l'oxydation complète du gaz combustible et de la vapeur de zinc. Cette poudre d'oxyde de zinc peut être utilisée comme composant dans des compositions de protection solaire destinées à assurer une protection contre les rayons ultraviolets.
