A medicinal object for treating early symptoms of the common cold comprises a small, lightweight member consisting substantially of pure zinc metal. Preferably, the member ranges between one and three inches in length and has a weight of less than 8 ounces, preferably less than 2 ounces . A process for administration of sub-microscopic zinc metal to a patient's body in order to treat or prevent a common cold includes positioning a piece of substantially pure zinc metal near the patient's nasal passages and having the patient inhale sub-microscopic zinc particles from the zinc metal piece.
