Case 2539 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Electrical devices suitable for use in difficult environments include portions thereof made from material selected from the group comprising zirconium and zirconium alloy. The component parts are manufactured in an electrically non-insulated condition and pre-assembled in potentially mutual shortcircuited relation, and then processed in order to develop a zirconia insulating layer, even in the case where intimate shortcircuiting contact exits. In some instances at least, there is no imperative need to roughen the surfaces prior to formation of the zirconia protective layer. The thickness of the layer can be controlled to enhance the security of interfitted parts.
