Porous zirconia or zirconium-containing particles, methods of making such particles and methods of using such particles including modifications to the surface of the parti- cles are described. The method comprises heating zirconia particles to provide a substantially homogeneously liquid melt, quenching the particles of melt to effect spinodal de- composition to provide quench particles of a silica rich phase and a zirconia rich phase, annealing the quenched particles to provide non porous solid particles of zirconia and sil- ica and, leaching the silica from these particles to produce porous solid zirconia particles comprising a three dimen- sionally substantially continuous inter penetrating network of interconnected pores.

Le procédé consiste à chauffer des particules de zircone jusqu'à obtention d'une masse en fusion à liquidité sensiblement homogène, à refroidir rapidement les particules de la masse en fusion de manière à provoquer une décomposition spinodale et à obtenir des particules refroidies d'une phase riche en silice et d'une phase riche en zircone, à recuire les particules refroidies de manière à obtenir des particules solides et non poreuses de zircone et de silice, et à lixivier ces particules de manière à en extraire la silice et à obtenir des particules solides et poreuses de zircone comportant un réseau interpénétré et sensiblement continu de manière tridimensionnelle de pores reliés les uns aux autres.
