Abstract A process for producing zirconium dioxide powder, which process comprises dissolving zirconyl chloride in concentrated formic acid, removing water, hydrogen chloride and formic acid by evaporation, calcining the reaction product at elevated temperature and, when required, grinding the calcined product. The product so prepared can further comprise stabilizers, such as oxides of yttrium, cerium, magnesium and the rare earths. The zirconium oxide powder according to the invention is suitable for the production of sintered bodies which can be exposed to high mechanical and/or thermal stresses or can be used for optical purposes.
