ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of zirconium dioxide powder is disclosed. According to the process, zirconyl chlor- ide, optionally with a stabilizer or with a precursor of a stabi- lizer, is melted in the presence of a diol of the general formula HO - X - OH, in which X represents a saturated hydrocarbon radi- cal having 2 to 5 carbon atoms. Water and hydrogen chloride are then evaporated off and the reaction product is calcined at elevated temperature in an oxygen-containing gas and optionally milled. The unstabilized or stabilized zirconium dioxide powder so produced has good flow, compression and sinter properties and is suitable for the production of sintered articles which can be subjected to high mechanical and/or thermal stresses.
