ABSTRACT Novel compounds of the general formula Image (I) wherein R and R1 each represent hydrogen or alkyl of up to 4 carbon atoms and each of R2, R3, R4 and R5 independently represents hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine or alkyl of up to 4 carbon atoms may be prepared by reacting a cis compound of the general formula Image (II) in which Y is oxygen or sulphur and Ro is an optionally-substituted alkyl group, an alkali or alkaline earth metal ion or an ammonium or alkylammonium ion, with a cyanide and a compound of formula RNH2. These novel compounds find use in the preparation of biologically active 2-cyano and 2-carboxy-3- azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane derivatives.
