ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process for thermally treat- ing a lateritic nickel ore, more particularly for its reduction roasting, and an apparatus for carrying out the process. The nickel ore, preheated by an exhaust gas blast, is first brought up to its reduction temperature. To complete the reduction, the preheated nickel ore is whirled through by a highly reducing gas, any still combustible gases are thereafter burned, and the heat liberated in this manner is fed back to the exhaust gas blast for preheating the nickel ore. The apparatus consists of a reaction chamber in the upper region of which at least one burner and/or at least one hot gas piping is installed tangentially. Also provided in the apparatus are means for the input and output of the ore, a water-cooled girder grillage equipped with blast nozzles, and an after-burner chamber positioned between the re- action chamber and the exhaust gas piping.
