ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A planting dibble for the mechanical planting of plants, particularly plants rooted in clods, having a hole forming member comprising two parts mounted in guideways which diverge from the lowermost position of the hole forming member. The two parts are movable in their respective guideways by a lateral pin slidable in a bore in each of the parts and held by the end of a piston rod, which extends from the lower end of a cylinder in the upper part of the dibble. Extension of the piston rod forces the hole forming members down so that their lower ends are adjacent and are capable of forming the hole; retraction of the piston rod raises the hole forming parts while moving these apart to spread the hole and to allow the plant to be placed between them in the hole.
