ABSTRACT An electronic timepiece has an LED digital time display and timekeeping means providing time-representative signals for operating such display. The digital display segment electrodes in the display are operated by the signals in the time-shared manner by means including an electronic scanning switch circuit arrangement which provides time-shared energisation of the segment electrodes by energising pulses. Means are provided for detecting the number of segment electrodes to be energised to produce from a multi-segment numeric element in the display the display of a particular numeral thereby. Means are also provided for controlling the energising pulse widths applied to the display segment electrodes in dependence upon the de- tected number so as to produce substantially the same brightness from any numeral displayed. In the foregoing manner, the power consumption of the LED display is reduced sufficiently that the timepiece can be left normally in use without running down the battery in an unacceptably short time.
