ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for selectively producing liquid polyisobutene contacting a feed stream containing mixed butenes with a dry chlorinated alumina catalyst at a temperature of from about -15 to about 50°C wherein the chlorinated alumina contains from about 2 to 12% by weight of chlorine and the alumina has a purity of at least 99% and a surface area greater than 150 m2/g with at least 10% of the pores having a mean diameter larger than 200.ANG. and recovering polyisobutenes having a molecular weight between about 280 and 4000.
