"RECHARGEABLE ELECTRICAL STORAGE BATTERY WITH ZINC ANODE AND AQUEOUS ALKALINE ELECTROLYTE" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A battery is provided having a zinc containing anode including finely divided in situ electrochemically oxidized zinc metal particles supported on a substrate. The cathode preferably contains a metal oxide selected from NiO, AgO, Ag2O, MnO2, HgO, PbO2 and mixtures thereof. The battery also preferably includes an aqueous alkaline electrolyte containing an inorganic manganese compound additive soluble in the electrolyte. This electrode formation and preferred electrolyte additives are found to substantially avoid dendritic growth and anode shape change.
