Abstract of the Disclosure In tire chains having a tread part and lateral parts, it is known to have a lateral part that expands resiliently to fit the chain to the tire. This invention provides a tire chain that does not have to be stretched against the spring force of the resilient material or of the springs of the lateral part. The lateral part is fitted with at least one tensioning means, which is connected to the links of the tire chain by two relatively movable connecting members. A locking means is provided to secure the connecting members in an extended state. After the tire chain has been fitted, the lock is released and the connecting members move towards each other by spring force, thereby tightening the chain.
