ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for the continuous or semi-continuous pro- duction of hetero-macrocyclic compounds including lactones and cyclic ex- ters. The process involves the catalyzed depolymerization of a linear polyester at an elevated temperature and under reduced pressure in the presence of a specified amount of monocarboxylate moieties and while pro- viding top-to-bottom mixing throughout essentially the total volume of the reaction mass. The agitation is accomplished by conducting the depolymeri- zation in an inverted multiple-blade conical vessel wherein the blades have a helical configuration and are arranged to rotate throughout essentially the entire reaction mass and in close proximity to the interior surface of the conical vessel and in a direction which provides a downward flow within the reaction mixture. The process prepares such macrocyclic compounds of good quality while minimizing the formation of undesirable by-products.
