8CL-2776 AN INTERFACIAL POLYMERIZATION PROCESS FOR PREPARING POLYCARBONATES USING CERTAIN NITROGEN-CONTAINING ORGANIC CATALYSTS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to an interfacial polymerization process for preparing high molecular weight aromatic polycarbonates by reacting a dihydric phenol with a carbonate precursor in the presence of a catalytic amount of a selected one of a group of nitrogen-containing organic catalysts. The group of catalysts include certain sterically hindered secondary amines; non-cyclic polyamines, isourea compounds and iminoethers; and, certain nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds including cyclic di- or triamines, sterically hindered heterocycloaliphatic secondary amines, cyclic isourea compounds, cyclic iminoethers, pyrroles, nitrogen crown-cyclic compounds and certain other five to eight membered nitrogen-carbon heterocyclic compounds. Salts of certain of the foregoing may also be employed as catalysts in the practice of the present invention.
