TRANSFER PRINTING RIBBON ERROR DETECTION SYSTEM Abstract of the Disclosure Errors occurring during the printing of characters in an impact printer using transfer ribbon are detected by scanning the ribbon optically after the printing operation using a slit scanner and analyzing the resulting signals to determine the value of the printed character. This value is compared with the value of the character which was to be printed. If a discrepancy exists, a printing error has occurred.
