A B S T R A C T This invention relates to a process for preparing a pyrrolobenzodi- azepine of the formula Image I. wherein the symbol R represents hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl and tert-butyl; R1 represents hydrogen, methyl, ethyl and phenyl; R2 represents hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl and tert-butyl; R3 represents hydrogen, methoxy, trifluoromethyl, chloro, bromo and fluoro; R4 represents methyl, which compri- ses refluxing a phthalimidoacetamidopyrrole derivative of the formula II Image II wherein R, R1, R2, R3 and R4 have the same meanings as above and the group NR5R6 represents a phthalimido residue, with hydrazine in a lower alkanol and then cyclizing the so obtained amino derivative of formula II wherein NR5R6 represents amino to the pyrrolodiazepine I by heating with strong mineral acid. It also relates to the products of this process which are of interest due to their activity as CNS depressants, anticonvulsants, antiinflammatories and inhibitors of the enzymes which promote the synthesis of prostaglandins.
