ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A process for the distillation of a readily polymerizable vinyl aromatic compound. The process of the invention comprises subjecting the compound to distillation in a distillation zone containing from about 50 to about 100 distillation stages, at a reboiler temperature of from about 150°F to about 300°F and a reboiler pressure of from about 30 mm. to about 400 mm. Hg., and in the presence of a-polymerization inhibitor selected from the group consisting of NO, NO2, N2O3, NOCl and the adduct of NO(gas) and styrene, the inhibitor being present in an amount of from about 20 ppm to about 3000 ppm. The process results in higher recovery of a high purity unsaturated vinyl aromatic compound and concomitantly in the production of less undesirable by-products.
