ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A ballast for starting and operating a high intensity discharge type lamp is disclosed which incorporates electronic switching elements in one form. The apparatus includes a wind- ing on a magnetic core having at least one tap. A lamp is adapted for connection to the output of the winding and a series circuit of a resistor and a capacitor are connected in parallel of the lamp. A capacitor and a semiconductor controlled rectifier are connected in series to the tap and a diode is connected in shunt of the semiconductor controlled rectifier poled oppositely thereto. A diac is connected to the first capacitor and to the gate electrode of said semiconductor con- trolled rectifier for triggering the controlled rectifier into conduction when the voltage on the capacitor reaches a predeter- mined level. Suitably, the resistor-and-capacitor circuit is adjusted such that the desired triggering level occurs when the instantaneous AC voltage is at or near a peak level.
