ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Novel 5-phenyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-1,4-benzodiazepine- 2-one derivatives of the formula: Image (I) wherein R1 represents a chlorine, bromine or fluorine atom or a nitro group, R2 represents a hydrogen atom, a chlorine, bromine or fluorine atom and R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, with the proviso that R1 cannot represent chlorine when both R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms, show excellent tranquilizing and antidepressant activities and thus are useful as a minor transquilizer. Such benzodiazepine derivatives are prepared by reacting the corresponding 5-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-1,4-benzo- diazepin-2-one derivative with an appropriate epoxy derivative.
