ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Nacre coating of a biocompatible nucleating substrate is achieved by contacting such substrate with mantle tissue explant from a mollusca species under cellular growth promoting conditions. Salt containing media are employed with variations as to the other additives, which may include a source of a steroid material, a source of amino acids, a source of metabolizable energy, or other components. After incubation for sufficient time, nacre coated substrates are formed. By appropriate choice of the nucleus, pearls can be produced.
