ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The apparatus for counting the number of paper sheets comprizes a hopper in which the paper sheets are stored in a stacked state, a feed-out roll adapted for feeding out the paper sheets from the inside of said hopper, a stacker provided at the downstream side relative to the rotating direction of said payout roll, and a guide assembly provided opposite to the periphery of said payout roll and adapted for separately guiding the paper sheets from said hopper towards said stacker in cooperation with said payout roll. According to the invention, the guide assembly is carried at both ends thereof and comprizes a frame member provided intermediate the flanges of the apparatus so as to be movable between a closed position in which it is in close vicinity of the periphery of said feed-out roll and an opened position in which it is detached from said periphery, and an opening/closing device mounted to said flanges of the counting apparatus for engaging with said frame member for selectively moving said frame member to said closed position or opened position.
