ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A moderator having a high modulus of elasticity is disclosed for use in an article of footwear having an upper and at least a sole secured to said upper and including a cushioning material located between the sole wearer's foot. The moderator is made of a relatively thin, light weight material having a modulus of elasticity of at least about 250,000 p.s.i. The moderator has the ability to deflect without permanent deformation in response to an applied load creating a deflecting stress within the member and will return to its original shape upon removal of the applied load. The deflection of the member permits absorption, redistribution and storage of the energy of localized loads applied thereto and returns the energy to the wearer at a rate equal to or greater than the rate at which the applied load is removed. This results in improved comfort, support and stability for the foot and lower leg.
