Abstract In a method of removing mercury from an incinerator exhaust gas, the exhaust gas is washed with a wash liquid containing a solution of caustic soda and a solution of hypochlorite and having an adjusted pH in a range from 6 to 9 thereby removing the total mercury in the exhaust gas with high efficiency and preventing the generation of chlorine gas from the wash liquid.
