A B S T R A C T PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF ETHYLIDENE DIACETATE AND/OR ACETIC ACID ANHYDRIDE A process for the preparation of ethylidene diacetate and/or acetic acid anhydride by reacting methyl acetate and/or dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide or a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of a homogeneous catalyst system comprising a Group VIII noble metal compound, a bromide or iodide source, and a Group Va compound represented by the general formula Image I in which X is a Group Va element having a valency above 3 selected from N, P, As or Sb; Y is a Group VIa element selected from O, S, or Se and either a, b and c are 0 or 1 and R1, R2 and R3 are similar or dissimilar optionally substituted hydrocarbon groups; or a and b are 0 and c is 0 or 1 and R1 and R2 form together with X a heterocyclic group; or a, b and c are 0 and R1, R2 and R3 form to- gether with X a heterocyclic aromatic group.
