ABSTRACT In situ hybridization method for the detection of viral RNA or DNA, involving the hybridization of a tissue sample with an 35S-labeled HTLV-III RNA probe. The probe detects HTLV-III in primary, uncultured tissue samples, is highly sensitive, and is relatively fast acting. The RNA probe may be synthesized from cloned HTLV-III DNA inserted into a suitable transcription vector.
