ABSTRACT A building block comprising a stacking section having a front, a back, a top, a bottom and two ends; a mortar section having a front, a back, a top, a bottom and two ends; said mortar section and said stacking section being back to back; said mortar section having a length less than the length of the said stacking section and said mortar section having a depth less than the depth of the said stacking section so that, in use, when stacked with similar blocks the said stacking sections form fish joints and the said mortar sections have mortar between them; the said mortar section being offset from the said stacking section in height more than the difference in depth of the said mortar section and the said stacking section, and the said mortar section being offset from the said stacking section longitudinally more than the difference in length of the said mortar section and the said stacking section, so that in use each flush joint terminates at a said back of a said stacking section; and said building block being made of an insulative material having substantially greater insulative properties than the mortar.
