ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A self-supporting, dimensionally stable carbon composite member and method for its production. The composite member has at least one carbon felt layer and at least one thin, sheet-like shaped carbon member adhesively secured together, with the shaped carbon member and the carbon felt layer alternating with respect to each other. The shaped carbon members comprise carbon particles as filler and a carbonaceous binder with the binder proportion of about 50% to 150% by weight. The carbon members are shaped by shearing forces into a thin, plate-like shape and are subjected to a first thermal treatment and then together with the carbon felt layer to a second thermal treatment to consolidate or harden the carbon member containing the carbonaceous binder and the carbon felt layer into the configuration of the carbon composite member. The carbon composite member has high dimensional stability and thermal insulation and has good electrical properties.
