ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automatically controlled microwave heating appli- ance has a gas sensor and a heat sensing transducer such as a thermistor within an air passage containing air being expelled from a heating chamber. A switching means controlled by a microcomputer is provided to control the enabling circuit of a microwave generator. A "cook" switch which causes the micro- computer to initiate the heating of all different foods. Based upon the rate of variation in the magnitude of the output signal from the gas sensor with respect to time, the micro- computer determines what kind of food is being heated and then establishes an intended final level for the output signals from the gas sensor and the heat sensing transducer. A heating stop signal is issued when the output signals reach the intended final levels.
