ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a process for the preparation of oxophthalazinyl acetic acids of the formula: Image VIII wherein R1 is H or alkyl; R3 and R4 are H or substituent such as halo, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro or alkylthio; R5 and R6 are H or substituent; Z is H or CH3; and U is S, CH2 or a bond). The process comprises reacting an oxophthalazinyl acetic acid ester of the formula: Image VI (wherein W' is S, CH2 or a bond and Q is CN or Image where R2 is alkyl) with an aniline derivative of the formula: Image VII Also disclosed are processes for the preparation of such oxophthalazinyl esters.
