MULTIMODE FIBER OPTIC ROTATION SENSOR Abstract A fiber optic rotation sensor comprises a length of multimode optical fiber, forming a sensing loop for sensing rotation in accordance with the Sagnac effect. Nonrotationally induced phase errors in the detected optical signal reduced or eliminated by (a) utilizing a light source which produces light having a coherence length which is less than the difference in optical path length between modes; (b) utilizing a sufficiently large detector so that substantially the entire optical output signal is intercepted by such detector; and (c) coupling light to the multimode fiber so that the electric field amplitudes in each of the modes are substantially equal.
