ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel apparatus is provided herein for handling and counting sheets. The apparatus includes feed roller means each rotatable about a first axis and stripper means each forming a first nip with the feed roller means for advancing single sheets past the first nips. Rotatable driven roller means are provided which are coaxial with the first axis. Acceleration drive roller means are provided which are rotatable about a second axis displaced from the first axis. Closed loop belt means are provided for coupling drive from the acceleration drive roller means to the driven roller means. Idler means are provided in which the periphery thereof rollingly engages the acceleration drive roller means and forms a second nip for accelerating sheets entering the second nip. Finally, guide means cooperate with the belt means for guiding sheets between the first and second nips. By this apparatus the acceleration means provided to facilitate sheet counting utilizes elongated closed loop belt means to permit the handling and counting of sheets whose lengths extend over a relatively broad range to provide some pre-acceleration and to avoid the need for increase in the size of the feed rollers, to avoid damage to sheets and to provide quieter operation.
