RECOVERY OF BITUMINOUS OIL FROM TAR SANDS ABSTRACT This invention is related to a method of separating the bituminous oil from the solid matters in the oil-bearing sand such as the Athabasca tar sands by subjecting the tar sands in a sub-ultracentrifugal field of sufficient strength and for a sufficient period of time to effect the separation. The re- covery of oil is promoted by centrifugal sedimentation em- ploying an aqueous alkaline displacement medium having a specific gravity substantially higher than the oil but lower than the sands thereof.
