A DNA probe assay is described using neutrally charged probe strands. Oligonucleotidic sequences to be detected are hybridized with these probes and the hybridized products are therefore conveniently separated from unhybridized probes on a positively charged solid phase. Unhybridized probes or the solid phase having retained the hybridized products are then analyzed to determine the presence or quantity of the oligonucleotide sequences to be detected.
