A wound dressing is described which contains a fabric layer within which is deposited a layer of a hydrophilic material. The fabric layer with the layer of hydrophilic material therewithin is associated with a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive material for adhering the dressing to the patient. The dressing desirably has a moisture vapor transmission rate of at least 200, and preferably between 300 to 800, grams of water per square meter per 24 hours at 50% relative humidity at 36°C when measured in accordance with ASTM Procedure No. E96-80.
