ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The molecular weight of irradiated carboxymethyl cellu- lose can be stabilized by heat treatment of irradiated carboxy- methyl cellulose at a temperature from about 50°C to about 150°C, preferably from about 70°C to about 90°C. Equal amounts of stabilized CMC will produce solutions having essentially the same viscosities regardless of the length of time between irradiation and solution preparation.
