ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to an improved diagnostic composition and method for fluoroimmuno assay. The method uses the new fluorescent, diagnostic composition which comprises: (a) a hydrophobic hapten; (b) a hydrophilic compound which is selected from the group consist- ing of aminoglycoside, peptide, protein and acrylamide hydrazine; (c) a hydrophobic fluorescent compound which is selected from the group consisting of fluorescein, umbelliferone and fluorescamine; and (d) the hapten and hydrophobic fluorescent compound both being chemically bound to, and spaced from each other by, the hydrophilic compound. The composition and method are useful for measuring the presence of anticonvul- sant drugs such as phenobarbital, diphenylhydantoin and primidone.
