- 1 - Abstract. The invention provides a method for producing an optical fiber having a surface coating of a UV-curable resin. The method comprises the following steps. An optical fiber is spun from a molten preform and a UV curable resin is applied to the surface of the fiber to form a resin coating. The coated fiber is passed through a container having UV transparent walls containing a gas for promoting the curing of the resin upon exposure to UV light. A layer of fluid material is provided outside the walls moving past the container at a predetermined flow rate. The fluid material contains at least two UV light-absorbing materials which have different absorbing wavelengths. The resin on the fiber is irradiated with UV light through the fluid material and through the container walls. The quantity of UV light absorbed by the fluid material is adjusted to compensate for build-up of resin on the container walls.
