ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process for controlling the photocoagulation of biological tissue and to an apparatus for performing the same. An intense light radiation source and a measuring radiation source is imaged in the area to be coagulated. On the basis of the information obtained from the local luminance distribution, it is possible by means of a regulating unit acting on the sighting unit and the imaging optics to both select the area and also set the intended coagulation area within the same. The control of the irradiation takes place by means of a regulating device acting on the intense light source and its imaging optics. The local luminance distribution is determined from the measurement of the luminances in individual partial areas of the area illuminated by the measuring radiation source. The invention is based on the findings of recent research showing that the size of the coagulated tissue volume can be determined by measuring the increase in the luminance. On the basis of this measurement, it is possible to discriminate the radial and depth extension of the coagulation action and this can be used for the planned control of the coagulation process, in a way which is not known with the prior art device and processes.
