ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A coined cathode/converter for the ionisation chamber of a MWPC photon detector comprising an array of rectangular wells in a layer of lead or lead alloy, formed by spark-erosion machining. The thickness of the walls and floor of each well is so as to maximise the efficiency fo the detector by increasing the surface area to volume ratio of the cathode/converter.
