ABSTRACT A method of controlling biofouling in an aqueous system comprising introducing into the system a biocidally effective amount of a water soluble perhalide of the formula: Image where R1 and R2 are hydrogen, hydroxyethyl, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkyl ether, polyoxyalkylene, and halogenated alkyl; n is 2 to 6: X is chlorine, bromine or iodine; and only one of R1 and R2 may be hydrogen.
