3'-Fluoropyrimidine and purine nucleosides of the general formula (I): Image (I) wherein B represents a group of formula Image (A) OR Image (B) in which R1 represents a chlorine or iodine atom, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or an amino group and R3 represents a C3-6 cycloalkylamino, C1-6 straight or branched chain alkoxy, C3-7 cycloalkoxy or a 5- or 6- membered heterocyclic ring bonded to the purine residue via a nitrogen atom in the said ring, have been found to have potent antiviral activity particularly against Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
