ABSTRACT A process for preparing .beta.-lactam antibiotics of the formula Image V wherein R1 is hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl; and M? and M? are alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium, alkyl ammonium or pyridinium ions and M? in addition is hydrogen. The compounds of formula V are useful for combating bacterial infections in mammals.
