Abstract: The present invention relates to the preparation of 2,2,3-trifluoropropionyl fluorides which are useful as solvents or as intermediates for synthesis of medicines or solvents. These compounds are prepared by catalytic ring opening of tetrafluorooxetane. The preferred catalysts are alkali metal fluorides (such as sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride or cesium fluoride) or Lewis acids (such as A1C13 or SbF5). The reaction may be carried out either in a liquid phase or in a gaseous phase, preferably at a temperature of 80-200°C.
