ABSTRACT An improved retainer for a brake assembly including a spider mounted on an axle, a set of anchor pins and a camshaft mounted on the spider, a pair of brake shoes mounted on the anchor pins and operatively engageable with the camshaft, and a retracting spring interconnecting the shoes is disclosed. The retainer comprises a member which biases the lower ends of the shoes together into bearing contact with the anchor pins. The member includes a base section engageable with one of the shoes, a pair of leg sections projectable from the base section toward the other shoe, and hook sections disposed on the free ends of the leg sections engageable with the other shoe when the member is disposed in an assembled condition on the brake assembly. The retainer greatly simplifies the mounting of the brake shoes in the brake assembly.
