A method of disinfecting a contact lens is described which method comprises contacting the lens to be disinfected with an aqueous solution containing sulphur dioxide and/or benzoic acid under acidic conditions for a period of time sufficient to disinfect the lens. The pH of the solution may be adjusted to the range 6 to 8 so that when the disinfected lens is removed from the solution and replaced in the eye, it is substantially non-irritant to the eye. The pH adjustment is preferable carried out employing the delayed release of a material which has an alkaline reaction with water whereby all the components of the system may be present at the beginning of the disinfection cycle. Compositions and packs for use in the process are also described.
