A B S T R A C T A process for the preparation of a carboxylic acid of the general formula RCOOH wherein R respresents an alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aralkyl group by heating an ester of formic acid of the general formula HCOOR wherein R is as defined above in the presence of carbon monoxide, a soluble palladium catalyst, a nickel co-catalyst, an iodide and/or bromide source and an organic nitrogen compound containing a group Image or a sulphone.
