ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electronic pressing iron having a soleplate with an electric heater mounted therein and a plastic housing connected thereto. thermistor mounted in the soleplate senses a temperature thereof and a comparator compares a temperature signal from the thermistor to a reference. A thyristor controls an electric current flowing through the electric heater and controls the temperature of the soleplate in response to the tempera- ture signal. A motion and attitude sensor, including a mercury switch, is connected to a timer, and in conjunc- tion therewith is adapted to disable the electric heater when the iron is oriented with the soleplate substantial- ly horizontal and is not moving. The motion and attitude sensor and timer are also adapted to disable the electric heater when the iron is oriented with its soleplate substantially vertical.
